Today I provided the City of Niagara Falls and municipal election candidates with a Notice and Conditional Formal Election Sign By-law Complaint concerning numerous apparent election-sign issues documented across the city.
This is not a request for immediate enforcement. Candidates are being given a fair and reasonable opportunity to inspect the identified locations and voluntarily correct or remove signs that may not comply.
Unless the identified issues are satisfactorily addressed, the notice will become my formal request for enforcement on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
The same rules should apply fairly and consistently to every candidate. When incumbent councillors appear not to follow rules governing their own campaigns, residents may reasonably question the credibility of their commitment to follow and uphold municipal rules while exercising public office.
The City’s response is also important. Fair notice followed by consistent and even-handed enforcement protects candidates, residents and public confidence in the municipal election process.
The illustration below provides a plain-language summary. The complete notice, supporting photographs and requested remedies follow.
